The Clifford Funeral Home is a fourth generation funeral home in Rutland, Vermont having served the communities in central Vermont for over 138 years. In 1875, Stephen C. Clifford and John P. Clifford founded Clifford Brothers Furniture and Undertaking business in Rutland. John P. Clifford was a member for fifteen years with the Rutland Police Force and served as Chief of Police for three terms during 1901- 1906. John carried on the funeral business until 1918 when his son, George M. Clifford, was made a member of the firm. In 1930 George M. Clifford and his brother, Louis A. Clifford purchased property at 30-32 North Main St. in Rutland and operated the funeral business into the 1950’s when George’s son, G. Joseph Clifford, joined the company.

During the late 1950’s the business was moved to its present location at 2 Washington St. Rutland. In 1968, a large addition for a homey viewing room was added. In the 1970’s under the leadership of G. Joseph Clifford, his two sons, fourth generation funeral directors, Gary H. Clifford and James J. Clifford joined the business and in 1985, included a second location, the Mullin-Clifford Funeral Home in West Rutland.
