West Rutland – Edward Francis Gilman
Edward Francis Gilman 72, died August 9, 2026. The lord has taken one of the infamous “Stratton Road Gang”
He was born October 24, 1953 in Rutland the son of Francis and Margaret (Chamberland) Gilman.
Edwards’s first job was at Hubbard’s Farm while in high school, and Rutland Auto where he met Warren Pease who asked his help fueling his funny car in New Jersey.
Upon graduation he started at General Electric until he retired. He held many jobs throughout his career at Aldous Ambulance and helped form Regional Ambulance Service, he trained at FEMA for Emergency Management, treasurer for Vermont State Fire Fighters and later Vice President and President.
He was in charge of the town’s water department and found out that the dam behind his house was deteriorating so he had the Vermont Army Corps of Engineer repair and save the dam. In his spare time throughout his journey he was a janitor at West Rutland and Barstow Schools. He was dedicated to protecting the town and its water department and became the towns Emergency Management Director and was later asked by the State of Vermont to us e his plans. He later stepped up to run Rutland City Water Department after two workers lost their lives in Hurricane Irene.
His last and favorite project was building the walking bridge and sidewalks to continue down to the Ave. He enjoyed seeing people, dogs, and kids riding bikes down the sidewalks.
Edward was a Lifetime member of VINS and enjoyed NASCAR.
He is survived by his wife Robin, son Ed Jr. (Terri), daughters, Courtney (Nick), Hillary. Grandsons Derek, Bentley, Grand-daughters Erin & Noah. Also by his brother Fran & family.
He was predeceased by his parents, Sister Diane
Visiting hours will be held on Monday August 17, 2026 from 6-8 P.M. at Clifford Funeral Home.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday August 18, 2026 at 11 A.M. at Christ the King Church.
Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery.
