Elizabeth Smith

Elizabeth “Besty” (Carrigan) Smith, 85, of Rutland, died on February 23, 2025, at The Pines in Rutland.

Betsy was born on September 17, 1939, in Rutland, VT, the daughter of Martin and Mary (Hennessey) Carrigan.

She graduated class of 1957, from Mount Saint Joseph Academy and worked in the family grocery store, Carrigan’s Market, until it closed.  She went on to work as a clerk for the Rutland Herald until her retirement.

Survivors include her sons, Mark Smith of Rutland, VT, and Matthew (Margo) Smith of Frontenac, MN; daughter, Karen Poljacik of Rutland, VT; granddaughters Heather, Chelsea and Natalie and great-granddaughters Sophie, Alivia, Emma, and Morgan.

She was predeceased by both parents, her brothers Thomas and Martin, and an infant son, Martin Smith.

Calling hours will be held from 4:00-6:00pm on Wednesday, March 5, 2025, at Clifford Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 11:00am on Thursday, March 6, 2025, at Christ the King Church. A burial service will be held at Calvary Cemetery in Rutland at a later date.
