Ellanora Anne (Burke) Thompson, 89, of Rutland, passed away peacefully July 10, 2025 in her home at The Gables. She was surrounded by family and love in her last days.
Ellanora was born in Rutland on January 30, 1936 to Matthew and Beatrice (LaFond) Burke Sr. She graduated from Rutland High School. Ellanora’s Catholic faith was a pillar in her life; she was a life-long member of Christ the King Church.
On July 26, 1958 she married the love of her life, Earle Thompson, with whom she raised a loving family and built the family business, Green Mountain Realty. For nearly 50 years as a Realtor, Ellanora helped generations of Rutland families buy and sell their homes. She was a longtime member and past president of the Rutland County Board of Realtors and served on the Governor’s Economic Council.
More than anything, Ellanora loved spending time with family and friends. She was in her element hosting family events and picnics at her home in Clarendon. She treasured time spent at Lake Bomoseen, visiting her children and grandchildren, and traveling with her husband. In her later years, “Ellie” and her sisters Charleen and Claire became a package deal (“the ladies”), spending time together daily and taking care of one another.
She is survived by her sister and constant companion Charleen (Burke) Godleski of Rutland; her son, Joseph Thompson and his wife Jerrie of Clarendon; three daughters, Dagyne Canney and her husband John of Malta, NY, ZoeAnne Merrill and her husband Scott of Vero Beach, FL, Monique Thompson and her husband Oliver John of Berkeley, CA; six grandchildren Melissa, John, Will, Ella, Simone, Katya; her great-grandson Callan; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
Ellanora is predeceased by her husband of 52 years Earle Thompson (2010), her parents Matthew and Beatrice Burke Sr., and siblings Matthew Burke Jr. and Claire (Burke) Sullivan.
A funeral mass will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, July 14 at Christ the King Church with a celebration of life to follow at Southside Steakhouse. There will be no visiting hours. Burial at Evergreen Cemetery will occur at a later date. Contributions may be made to Rutland Area Visiting Nurse-Hospice Association or to Christ the King Church.
