Bomoseen, Vermont - James P. Leamy, Jr.
James P. Leamy, Jr., 92, died January 12, 2026 at his residence. He was born October 12, 1933 in Rutland, Vermont, the son of James P. and Margaret (Lalor) Leamy. His father was an attorney and later a U.S. District Court Judge for Vermont.
Jim was a graduate of West Rutland High School, Class of 1951. He graduated from St. Michael’s College, in Winooski, Vermont in 1955, and served in the U.S. Army from 1955 to 1957. He later received a Master’s Degree in Education from St. Michael’s College. He began his teaching career in 1958 at Proctor High School where he taught history and social studies and coached boys’ basketball. He also coached boys’ basketball at West Rutland High School. He taught history and social studies at Rutland Junior High School for many years, and was the boys’ varsity basketball coach at Rutland High School from 1965 to 1991, with his team winning a Vermont State Class L title in 1967. He was inducted into the Vermont Basketball Coaches’ Association Hall of Fame.
He married Kathleen Salerni in 1966 at Christ the King Church in Rutland, Vermont, who died in 2024.
Jim was a highly principled man. He served the Town of Castleton as Health Officer for many years and also was a member of the Town of Castleton Select Board. He was a member of the Lake Bomoseen Association and served for a period of time as its executive director. He was a primary initiator and ardent supporter of efforts to improve and maintain the water quality and health of Lake Bomoseen. He was given a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Vermont League of Cities and Towns for his many years of civic service on behalf of the Town of Castleton. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church in Castleton.
He is survived by his brother-in-law Ted Salerni, and also by nephews David Salerni, Tony Salerni and Ted Salerni, Jr. and niece Cathy McGinness.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday January 24, 2026 at 11 A.M. at St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church, Castleton, Vermont, with the Rev. Romanus Igweonu as the celebrant.
