Joan Pearl Bower, 81, of Rutland, VT, died on May 2, 2024, in her home with her family by her side.

Joan was born on October 2, 1942, in Iberville, Quebec, Canada, the daughter of Gordon and Bertrand (Chouquette) Knight. She attended school in St. Jean sur Richelieu Quebec and earned a business degree from Sir George Williams School of Business in Montreal. Upon graduation, she was employed as a secretary by Canadian National railways at their corporate headquarters in Montreal.

She met her future husband Ronald in Plattsburgh, New York while he was stationed there with the United States Air Force. They were married on May 14, 1966, in St. Jean Sur Richelieu and resided in Grand Forks, North Dakota, where Ronald had been transferred by the Air Force.

Upon Ronald’s discharge from the Air Force, they returned East to Burlington, VT. Due to Ronald’s work transfers, they lived in several towns in Vermont and Joan held secretarial positions in each of them until finally setting in Rutland, where Joan worked as a secretary for Stafford Technical Center until her retirement.

Joan enjoyed traveling, bowling, swimming, boating on Lake Bomoseen, and loved to go shopping.

Survivors include her husband, Ronald Bower; son Christopher Bower of Rutland; daughter Danielle Bower of Burlington; and sister Nancy Hamling of Vancouver, Canada.

She was predeceased by both parents and by her brother Wesley Knight.

A funeral service will be held at 2pm Thursday May 23, 2024 at Clifford Funeral Home. Visiting Hours will be held from 1pm to 2:30pm Thursday May 23, 2024 at Clifford Funeral Home.

A burial will follow in Saint Joseph’s Cemetery.

A reception will be held following the burial at Southside Steakhouse in Rutland.

Arrangements are under the direction of Clifford Funeral Home.
