Rutland

RUTLAND Joan Gertrude Hogenkamp died on March 19, 2024, at her home in Rutland, Vermont. She was born on June 25, 1929, in Utica, NY, to Gertrude (Ryan) Karl and Peter Adam Karl. She attended Blessed Sacrament and Saint Frances de Sales Schools in Utica, NY, and graduated from Mary- wood College in Scranton, PA, majoring in Home Economics. After college, she taught at Hoosick Falls Cent- ral School in Hoosick Falls, NY.

She met William Jerome Hogenkamp, her husband of 48 years, at Fourth Lake in the Adirondack Park of New York State. They were married on October 24, 1953, at Blessed Sacrament Church in Utica, NY. They moved frequently in their early years, and settled in Clinton, NY, in 1968, building a home up the street from her sister Mary Louise on a former bean field. Once her children were up and running, Joan went back to work as a real estate agent, which she tackled with the enthusiasm and energy she went about everything, until her retirement in 1989, upon which she and Bill moved to New Smyrna Beach, Florida. Several years later, realizing she wanted to spend more time with her family, they moved to Rutland, Vermont, where they enjoyed many years of hiking, biking, skiing, and getting to know their grandchildren. Joan loved to cook and bake, and she will be long remembered for her raspberry pancakes, which she served with the maple syrup she helped make.

The residents of the Navajo Nation Reservation, to which she donated hundreds of hand-knitted hats, will attest to Joan’s skill with needles and yarn, which could be found in every corner of her apartment at the Gables. She also loved to quilt, making many for her children and grandchildren. Joan was an avid golfer and traveler, enjoying trips to Hawaii, Austria, Colorado, Utah, and Italy, where they went to visit her best friend’s relatives in Naples. Joan loved to play bridge, hosting the Monday night bridge club for many years, at which her children were not allowed to eat any of the Congo Squares she made for the ladies. She attended mass as often as she could, oftentimes going to great lengths to be able to attend.

Joan is survived by four children and their spouses: Mary and Bill Specht of Waterville, NY; Eric and Cassie Hogenkamp of Deerfield, IL; William Jr. and Nancy Hogenkamp of Lakewood, CO; and Peter and Lisa Hogenkamp of Rutland, VT. She is also survived by twelve grandchildren: Nathan, Jessica, and Will Specht (and Jessica’s husband Alex Barnes;) Eric and Ava Hogenkamp; Audrey, Olivia, and Liam Hogenkamp III; Daniel, Thomas, Abigail, and Maria Hogenkamp; her great granddaughter, Raelyn Specht; and her sister-in- law Marjorie Karl as well as many nieces and nephews.

Joan is predeceased by her husband, William Hogenkamp, as well as her brothers and sisters and their spouses: Jack and Mary Karl; Peter, Sydney, and Frances Karl; Mary Louise and Thomas Cosgrove; and Maureen and Daniel Montano. Joan is also predeceased by her brother-in-law Thomas Hogenkamp and his wife Eileen, and her grandson, David Specht.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 am on Saturday April 20, 2024, at Christ the King Church in Rutland, Vermont. There will be no calling hours, but a celebration of Joan’s life will be held in Waterville, NY on July 13, 2024.
