John G. Miller RUTLAND — With sadness, we announce the passing of Dr. John G. Miller, on October 29th, at the age of 96, in Rutland, Vermont. John was a quiet man. Never one who sought to have the last word – in fact, he was a man of few words – but what a deep listener. That was his job, his life’s passion, and his gift as a therapist and counselor. John’s curiosity about the world connected him to all kinds of people and their stories. John was born in Los Angeles, CA on June 8, 1928. The oldest of 5 children, he took his role as firstborn seriously. John served as an officer in the Korean War, coming back to marry the love of his life, Evelyn (Kibber) Brydon in Pocatello, Idaho in 1953. They were married for over 71 years. After receiving his Ph.D. from the University of Missouri in Columbia, John moved with his wife and six children to Burlington, Vermont, and four years later to Corte Madera, California. Though riding the ferry to work in San Francisco was an adventure, John had the opportunity in 1971 to be on the faculty of a new senior college, Sangamon State University in Springfield, Illinois, teaching courses in psychology, creativity, marriage, and family therapy, among others, while also establishing SSU’s counseling center. After an almost 30-year teaching career at SSU, now University of Illinois - Springfield, John retired as Professor Emeritus from UIS in 1999. After leaving UIS, he and Kibber established a counseling service called Miller and Miller Associates. As more counselers joined the company, the name was changed to Professional Counseling Offices. There, John was a skilled, creative, and caring psychologist, working until age 92. His clients’ well-being was deeply important to him. In 2013 John added author to his c.v. with the publication of Changing Roles in a New Psychotherapy. John and Kibber traveled all over the world and had adventures of all sorts, from sailing in Greece to walking the Great Wall of China and so many more. Springfield, Illinois was their home for 50 years, until moving in 2021 to be closer to family in Rutland, Vermont. John leaves behind his beloved wife Kibber, and their 6 children: Mary Ann (John) Pope of Belcarra BC, Mary (Bronwyn Williams) Brydon-Miller of Louisville KY, Jim (Florence) Miller of Davenport FL, Nancy (Fred) Miller Juhos of Woodinville WA, Lisa (Van) Purcell of Chittenden VT, and Bill (Pam Kaplan) Miller of Brooklyn NY, plus 12 grandchildren and 7 (soon 8) great-grandchildren. John is also survived by his good brothers Robert (Kathy) Miller of Huntington Beach CA and Richard (Jules Strand) Miller of Denver CO, and his sister-in-law Gea Miller of San Antonio TX. He was predeceased by his good brother Jim Miller. It was a long life of service to others and of deep love for his family. He continued to listen and always really see people – always seeing the best in any and all he met. His sharp blue eyes, his brilliant smile, and his gentle manner and patience will be missed. An extra special thank you to the staff of At Home Senior Care for their loving support and VNA & Hospice of the Southwest Region for their guidance through his last days. A celebration of life will be held at a future date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Rutland Free Library. Arrangements are under the direction of Clifford Funeral Home.
