John R Shaw

Rutland- John R. Shaw passed away at Rutland Regional Medical Center on October 8, 2025 

with his family by his side.

John was born in Fairhaven, Vermont on October 7, 1945 to Howard and Mertie (Colburn)

Shaw.

John was a proud veteran of the Vermont National Guard. In his younger years, he found great

joy in the outdoors, spending time in the woods, hunting, and fishing. He cherished gatherings

at his camp, surrounded by friends and family, where laughter and good stories were always in

abundance.

John deeply loved his family and had a warm, generous spirit that touched everyone around him.

He enjoyed escaping Vermont’s colder seasons by traveling to warmer climates with friends and

made annual spring trips to Boston to cheer on his favorite team, the Red Sox. His stories from

those times were filled with humor and happiness, always delivered with his trademark wit that

kept everyone entertained.

An animal lover at heart, John was especially devoted to the pets he rescued. One such act of

kindness was when he found an emaciated dog by the side of the road, he brought him home,

cared for him, and eventually found him a loving forever home. That was John: compassionate,

selfless, and always ready to help those in need.

Despite facing serious health challenges over the past year, which kept him from doing many of

the things he loved, John never lost his spirit. His beloved little white Shih Tzu, Millie, brought

him immense joy and comfort during this difficult time and was a constant source of strength and

hope.

John was a friend of Bill and lived his life with integrity, humor, and a big heart. He will be

remembered for the love he gave, the laughs he shared, and the lives he touched.

John is survived by his companion Doris, (Dorie) Murray, his daughter Karissa Peckham (Kyle),

his granddaughter Hayden Grace, a sister Rita Godette, his sisters-in-law Dorothy (Dot) and

Joanne Shaw. Several nieces , nephews and cousins. John was predeceased by his parents his

sister Isabel Williams, his brothers Howard and Francis Shaw .

A graveside service will be held on October 17 at 11 AM in Greenhill Cemetery in Wallingford

Vermont.
