Kathleen D. Larkin, 73, of Rutland, Vermont, passed away peacefully on February 5, 2026.
She was born on August 8, 1952 in Trenton, New Jersey to Dr. Michael Larkin and Mrs. Helen (Carroll) Larkin. She was the middle child of the five Larkin kids, and the only girl. She spent her early years in in Trenton, New Jersey and Yardley, Pennsylvania. Being surrounded by brothers, she naturally was competitive in sports. She enjoyed and excelled as a tennis player as a teenager, often scoring in the top five within her age group. She also loved playing field hockey and alpine skiing. She attended Eden Hall School for girls in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania until it closed. She then graduated from Stuart Country Day School in Princeton, New Jersey. Kathy attended Newton College in Massachusetts and then transferred to the University of Vermont, where she graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology in 1974.
Growing up Kathy loved spending her summers on the Jersey Shore, mostly in Sea Girt and Bay Head. She especially cherished that time spent with her mother, with younger brothers John and Brian in tow. With her family’s love of sports cars, came some contention among siblings. According to her brothers, she may or may not been responsible for blowing the engine of her 1966 Corvair. During the summer of 1973 Kathy and many life-long friends from the Follett and Sweeney families lived, worked, and explored Bar Harbor and Northern, Maine. Kathy also enjoyed travelling all over Europe in 1974 and later the western United States. Later she enjoyed crocheting and rug hooking. She was an exceptional calligrapher, potentially attributed to her catholic school upbringing. Kathy always especially valued time spent with her daughters and grandchildren, especially beating them in gin rummy.
Kathy is survived by her daughters, Jennifer (Jason) Pew and Abbie Sweeney, as well as her two grandsons, Hunter and Cooper Pew all of Rutland, Vermont. She is also survived by her brothers, Tim Larkin of Loveland, Colorado and John Larkin of Bristol, Pennsylvania, as well as many cousins, nieces, nephews. She was also survived by her ex-husband, and father of her children, Kevin Sweeney. She was predeceased by her parents, as well as her brothers Michael and Brian.
Funeral services will be held at a later date to be announced.
