Margaret Cheshire Smith Westcot

March 14, 1929 — April 20, 2024

Rutland

Margaret Cheshire Smith Westcot was born to Walter and Mabel Montross Smith on March 14, 1929, in Port Washington, New York. She passed away of complications of dementia on April 20, 2024.  Marge grew up spending summers in upstate New York, Vermont, and New Hampshire prior to losing both parents at an early age.  She graduated from Green Mountain College and fell in love with Vermont, making the Rutland region her home.  Following a brief career at Pike Insurance Agency, she met and married Robert Westcot, a lineman for Central Vermont Power and former Navy medic.

Marge was preceded in death by her husband Bob and daughter Linda Anne. She is survived by her sons Robert (Deborah Anderson), two grandchildren and three great grandchildren, and Thomas (Arvina Fusco) and her son-in-law Elias Younes (Libana Sfeir), as well as many nieces and nephews.

Marge was a keen reader of English novels. She took great pride in tending her ever-expanding garden where she proudly gave tours.  Her home was filled with Persian cats, which she raised, showed, and sold internationally under the name of Westmont Cattery.  In her later years, she doted on her Cavalier King Charles spaniels, which she took on frequent walks around the neighborhood.   Playing duplicate and contract bridge became a focal point of Marge’s social life as she enjoyed hosting games in her home and playing at the Godnick Senior Center and Christ the King Church with her many friends.

Tom and Bob would like to thank the staff at The Meadows for the loving care they bestowed on Marge as they graciously helped her along her journey.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that friends consider donations to their local humane society.

A funeral on Friday May 3, 2024 is to be held at Clifford Funeral Home at 11:00am.
