Martha Marro Dwyer

September 22, 1943 — January 6, 2017

Martha Marro Dwyer, of Rutland, died peacefully at home on Jan. 6, 2017, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Martha was born on Sept. 22, 1943, to James C. and Margaret Hogan Marro.
Martha graduated from Mount St. Joseph Academy in 1961. She graduated in 1964 with her R.N. degree from St. Elizabeth's School of Nursing in Brighton, Massachusetts, where she then worked on the open heart surgical team while attending Boston College. She later furthered her education by taking courses at the College of St. Joseph in Rutland.
She returned to Rutland in 1966 when she married Philip D. Dwyer on June 25 of that year. She worked in the Operating Room at the Rutland Regional Medical Center and then later became the office nurse for Dr. Charles Stewart until 1978. Martha retained her R.N. license and would work for the Red Cross and in local schools as a nurse.
In 1978, Martha switched from that of a working R.N. to becoming a "shopkeeper" when she opened a distinctive women's clothing store, The Ginger Tree, which she operated very successfully for 37 years. She received the Roger Brown Restoration Award for preserving the building at 45 North Main Street, where she continued to operate her business for the next 32 years.
Martha was totally involved in the community, as well as her family. She was secretary of the Vermont Retailer's Association for 25 years, during which time she promoted retail business throughout Vermont. She was a charter member of WINESC, a small but quite active investment group. She was also a member of the Friday afternoon knitting group. Martha was honored by the Rutland City School Board for her special and unselfish dedication to the Rutland Raider Booster Club for over two decades and her initiation and leadership to creation of the snack bar at Alumni Field. Martha was a dedicated member of the Rutland Garden Club where she chaired many civic beautification projects including the refurbishment of the Blue Star Memorial on Woodstock Avenue, for which she was recognized by the National Garden Club.
Martha was a wonderful woman who had many good friends because of her generous, thoughtful nature and her infectious good sense of humor. Martha maintained many childhood friends and this circle grew to include many more good lifelong friends who will miss her dearly.
Martha's love of family knew no bounds. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and sister.
She is survived by her beloved husband, Philip, and sons Philip, Jr. and Patrick, all of Rutland. She is survived by her sisters, Margaret Mickel, of Mendon, and Mary Jane Rotella (Guy), of Belmont, Massachusetts, and her brother, James Marro, of Oakland, California. She leaves behind her very special granddaughter, Harper Elizabeth. Also surviving are nieces Meg Curry, of Ossining, New York, and Mitzi Newton, of Mendon, in addition to many other nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her sisters-in-law, Rosemary, Eleanor and Jane, and brother-in-law Jack.
Calling hours will be from 3 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 11, in the Clifford Funeral Home.
