Michael Louis Nordmeyer

FLORENCE Michael Louis Nordmeyer, aged 64, died unexpectedly from a heart attack on December 7, 2023 in southern Vermont while on a service call.

Mike was born to Richard and Elaine Nordmeyer in Elmhurst, Illinois on September 24, 1959. He grew up in Glen Ellyn, Illinois where he graduated from Glenbard West High School in 1977 and attended College of DuPage. From a young age, Mike had an innate talent for mechanical engineering and technical problem solving: he could repair anything.

Mike loved being outdoors and fell in love with Vermont. He moved to the Nordmeyer family farm in Florence in 1977 and then fell in love again, this time with Susan Manney. He and Sue were married on July 13, 1985. Their daughter Aimee was born in 1991 and their son Ethan was born in 1993. Mike was so proud to be a grandfather after his grandson Ronan was born to Aimee and Ben Merkert in 2022.

Mike was a small business owner and expert mechanic. As the founder and owner of Central Vermont Truck Repair for four decades, Mike was a respected member of the Rutland business community. He not only employed mechanics but trained everyone who worked with him: how to repair large service trucks and how to serve customers. Over the years, he rescued thousands of stranded vehicles, sometimes in the middle of a snowstorm. Fleet owners and emergency services across New England knew about Mike’s expertise, care and generosity.

Mike touched many lives through his instinct to serve others and share the outdoors. He was trained as an EMT and served with the Pittsford first response team. Mike was a loving dad – he and Sue taught CCD for ten years, including teaching Aimee and Ethan. Mike coached Aimee in softball in Pittsford. Mike also served as Scoutmaster of Troop 110 in Pittsford from 2005 to 2018. He was a patient role model and provided leadership for the troop, mentoring many young men to attain the highest honor of Eagle Scout. One of his proudest moments was inducting his son Ethan as an Eagle Scout. Mike loved camping with Sue. Since the Nordmeyer family started going to Maine in the 1960s, Mike and Sue returned to Hermit Island each year.

Mike will be deeply missed by his family and friends.  He is survived by his wife Sue (Manney), son Ethan of Pittsford, VT, his daughter Aimee Merkert and her husband Ben and son Ronan of Hinesburg, VT, his brother David and his wife Mary of Warrensville, IL, and his brother Jon and his wife Cynthia of Newfane, VT, his sister Julie Gramling and her husband Phil of Ferrisburgh, VT, his brother-in-law Jeff Manney of Rutland, VT and Keith Manney of Chippenhook, VT, his mother-in-law Marie Manney of Rutland, VT, his beloved nieces and nephews, and his parents Richard and Elaine Nordmeyer of Hubbardton, VT.

Mike will be remembered as a loving son, brother, husband, father, uncle, grandfather and loyal, caring friend to many. Memorial gifts in lieu of flowers can be made in his memory to Rutland County Humane Society. Calling hours will be from 4:00 - 7:00 pm on Thursday, December 14 at Clifford Funeral Home in Rutland. The funeral mass will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, December 15 at St. Alphonsus in Pittsford with a reception to follow.

Funeral Services are under the direction of Clifford Funeral Home.
