Richard "Rick" A. Fitzsimmons Jr., age 71, passed away October 29, 2023 with loving family at his side.
Rick was born June 2, 1952 in Rutland, to Richard and Elaine (Lefevre) Fitzsimmons Sr., as the second of their six sons.
Rick was predeceased by his parents, two brothers Timothy and Kevin Fitzsimmons and a nephew, James Fitzsimmons. He is survived by three brothers Brian (Suzanne) Fitzsimmons and Colin Fitzsimmons of Rutland and Sean Fitzsimmons-Brown (Jeanie) of Florida, six nieces and nephews, eight great nieces and nephews, a large extended family and many dear friends. Rick attended Mount Saint Joseph Academy and went on to graduate from Wadhams Hall Seminary in 1977. He found his true calling in 1979, when he began his career as a police officer, employed by the Rutland City Police Department. Promoted to Sergeant in 1981, and later appointed to the Bureau of Criminal Investigation, he embraced his role as a detective focused on crimes against children; working tirelessly to ensure that those who harmed them would be brought to justice. Upon returning to his role as a Patrol Sergeant, he served as a shift supervisor until suffering a significant injury, in the line of duty. Although he worked for a few more years, the lasting effects of that injury led to his early retirement in 2001, after 22 years of courageous and dedicated service.
Rick belonged to St. Peter Church and his strong faith remained important to him throughout his life.
Rick loved children and at family gatherings, could always be found holding a baby, teaching toddlers to do something mischievous or teasing the older kids.
He enjoyed gardening, cooking, traveling, camping, religious studies and spending time with his family. He loved the Christmas season, Irish music and an occasional can of Guinness. Rick was larger than life, had a big smile, a contagious laugh and a loving heart.Calling hours will be held on Friday, November 3, 2023 from 4 to 7PM at Clifford Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11am in St. Peter’s Church on Saturday, November 4, 2023. Burial will follow at St. Joseph’s Cemetery.
