Rita Catherine "Nonna” Bernier (Russell), 78, passed away on July 30, 2025, in Dartmouth, New Hampshire, just one day shy of her 79th birthday.
Born on July 31, 1946, in Rutland, Vermont, Rita was raised in the heart of what was once known as “Little Italy”. She carried with her a deep pride in her Italian heritage and the close-knit community that shaped her early years. The daughter of Carmella (Panarello) Russell and Edward Russell, Rita’s upbringing instilled in her the values of family loyalty, resilience, and fierce love; qualities that would define her throughout her life.
A graduate of Mount Saint Joseph Academy in 1965, Rita went on to build a life centered around devotion to those she loved. She married Stephen Bernier, with whom she shared many years of partnership and dedication until his passing. Together they raised two daughters: Rita Lawrence (Kevin) and Mary Bernier. Her family was the cornerstone of her world.
Known to her family as “Nonna,” Rita’s legacy lives on through her grandchildren: Shaina Lethbridge (Michael), Nika Lawrence (Brandon), Téa Lawrence (Devon), Elizabeth Blanchard (Dawson), Abigail Lindhardt, Sarah Bernier, and Matthew Jackson. She also leaves behind twelve great-grandchildren who brought immense joy to her later years.
Rita had an unmatched passion for family gatherings—especially during the holidays. Decorations for nearly every holiday were always put up by her for her grandkids and greats (as she called them) to admire and enjoy. Rita was always looking forward to the next time everyone would be together. Her home was a haven filled with warmth, laughter, and the comforting aroma of baked goods from her kitchen. She found joy in crafting daily and took special pride in crocheting blankets for each generation of her family—a tangible expression of her enduring love.
Her garden bloomed under her care just as her family did under her guidance. Whether baking a favorite treat or sharing a bit of gossip over coffee, Rita brought color and character to every moment. She was known for her strength, grit, ferocity, determination, and stubbornness; but above all else, for the boundless love she gave so freely.
A strong-willed Italian woman through and through, Rita never hesitated to speak her mind. Yet behind every sharp word was a heart full of compassion and unwavering support. Her presence was singular. No one will ever compare to the force that was Rita.
May her memory bring comfort to those who knew and loved her. Her spirit lives on in every story told around the dinner table, every stitch in a handmade blanket, and every gathering where family comes first—just as she would have wanted.
