Robert W. Southgate passed away on June 15th, 2026, at the home of his son Eric with family in attendance.

Robert was born on April 12th, 1937, the son of Carlton and Marie (Courcelle) Southgate. He attended St. Peter’s school and was a 1956 graduate of Mount St. Joseph Academy. Upon graduation he joined the United States Navy, and spent the next four years aboard the U.S.S Macon traveling the world on the many seas.

During his time in the service, he was awarded the honor medal for rescuing a woman who had fallen off the balcony of a cruise ship into the harsh waters of Chicago Bay. Without thought of his own safety, he jumped from the bow of the USS Macon and saved the woman.

He is survived by his four children, Reeni Cain, Mary Crete, Eric Southgate, Carla Henry, and their children, several cousins, and great-grandchildren.

Per Robert’s wishes, there will be no services.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Robert’s name can be made to the Mt. Saint Joseph Academy online by clicking here.

The family wishes to thank Rutland Regional Medical Center 5th floor’s staff, and especially BAYADA Hospice nurses and staff for all of their wonderful care.
