Sir John Norton-Griffiths, 78, of Rutland Town, died Sunday, Jan. 29, 2017, at his home.
He was born in New York City on Oct. 4, 1938, the son of Sir Peter and Kathryn, Lady Norton-Griffiths (Schrafft).
John was married on Oct. 17, 1964, to Marilyn (Grimley) Norton-Griffiths, of Crosby, Liverpool (U.K.).
He was a Charted Accountant and a Fellow of the ICAEW. He worked professionally in the U.K., Trinidad and Zambia before moving to the U.S. in 1971.
John assisted in the consolidation of the accounting systems for Harvard and its associated Ladies College in Boston. After this, he worked for the Cabot Corp., managing the accounting for a large construction project in Staten Island. John and his wife both took data processing courses and worked as programmer/Analysis for Continental Insurance at Insco in New Jersey.
John opened his own business, writing software for running customized accounting systems and payrolls for local small businesses in Bricktown. John was a founding member of the O.C.B.A. (Ocean County Business Assoc.) and a founding member and third Commodore of the Bristol Sailing Club. Prior to this, he was a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary, patrolling the Inland Waterway rescuing minor boating mishaps or calling emergency services if required and also teaching boating safety and seamanship classes.
John owned and set up Brite Manufacturing Corp. in Clarendon producing wood splitting equipment and conveyors.
Surviving are his wife, of Rutland Town; a brother, Sir Michael and Ann, Lady Norton-Griffiths, of Kenya; a sister, Anne Morgan (Norton-Griffiths), of France; and numerous nieces, nephews, great- and great-great-nieces and -nephews in Kenya, France and England.
As a memorial, a celebration of life will be held at the Rutland Country Club in March. Details of time and date will be published later.
Arrangements are under the direction of Clifford Funeral Home in Rutland.
