Thomas W. Huebner

August 8, 1953 — March 26, 2025

Rutland

Thomas W. Huebner passed away Wednesday, March 26, leaving a legacy of service, leadership, and commitment to both his family and community.  Tom was born in Mt. Kisco, New York, to Thomas A. Huebner and the late Gladys “Johnnie” Huebner, and grew up in Chappaqua.  A graduate of Colby College and Boston University he served as the former President and CEO of Rutland Regional Medical Center (RRMC), until his retirement in 2018.

Known for his wit and wisdom, Tom was a guiding light in the Rutland, Vermont community and in the healthcare world for a generation. For 28 years as a leader at RRMC, he guided the organization with a steady hand and a compassionate heart. But his leadership extended beyond the hospital walls. He was an active board member, always ready to lend his expertise and support to numerous organizations focused on health and wellness services across Vermont, including the BlueCross BlueShield of Vermont, Community Health, the Federally Qualified Health Center in Rutland, the Brattleboro Retreat, VNA & Hospice of the Southwest Region, the Vermont Association of Hospitals and Health Systems, Come Alive Outside, OneCare Vermont and the American Hospitals Association. At the time of his passing, he continued to serve on five boards.

He was especially appreciated for and excelled in his role as Chief Maintenance Officer (CMO) at Rutland’s own Phoenix Books.

Tom was not just a leader but a beloved son, husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. His family was his pride and joy, and he cherished every moment spent with them. He loved traveling, spending time outdoors, and cooking. He especially reveled in the opportunity to relax and enjoy the beauty of Lake Champlain and Lake Wesauking. By far, the most important thing for him was to share these experiences with family and friends. Tom's presence was a gift to all who knew him. He will be missed by many and will surely be remembered lovingly for the man he was.

We celebrate Tom and a life well-lived, full of laughter, love, and dedication. His contributions to the community and his family will endure. His spirit will continue to inspire us all. Rest in peace, Tom, your legacy will live on in the hearts of many.

Tom is survived by his wife Tricia Huebner; his children Ben Huebner and Emily Huebner Dehn and their families, and Alex Means; his father Thomas A. Huebner; his three brothers Robert, William, and Geoff Huebner and their families; as well as many extended family members. He is preceded in death by his mother, and his first wife Jean A. C. Huebner, mother to Ben and Emily.

A celebration of Tom’s life will be held at 4pm on Tuesday, April 1st at the Paramount Theater in Rutland, Vermont. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to the Foley Cancer Center at Rutland Regional Medical Center to provide hope and health to patients and their families. We will remain forever grateful for the compassion and care he received at RRMC, and the Massachusetts General Hospital system.
