Rutland – Timothy S. McLaughlin

Timothy “Tim” McLaughlin 71, died unexpectedly at home on March 23, 2025. He was a great man who will be greatly missed.

He was born March 21, 1954, in Rutland the son of Francis Michael McLaughlin and Jocelyn Claire (Bishop) McLaughlin.

He graduated from Rutland High School in 1972 and furthered his education at Vermont Technical College receiving an Associate’s degree in Electromechanical Engineering Technology in 1974. Early on in his career, he decided to start his own business. He went on to own and operate Vermont Digital for 35 years.

Tim believed in hard work and simple things. He felt all things were possible if you had faith in them. He liked to figure things out, and help others figure things out. Adoringly called “Father Tim”, he was a cherished advisor, a true friend, and a life guide to many. He exuded positivity, acceptance and understanding, and was often approached by strangers who just wanted to talk. He was one of a kind, and of the best kind.

Tim was a loving son, brother, husband, father, “pop”, and friend. He was a wonderful husband to his wife and best friend, Joann, to whom he had been married for 44 years. He was the best dad, supporter, and confidant to his adoring daughters who will miss his voice, porch chats, and phone calls (more than ever), and he loved spending time with his grandchildren whom he taught many things and shared many laughs.

He enjoyed warm weather, coffee with friends, his gardens and flowers, fishing, shooting, boat rides on the lake, trips to Maine, and riding in his Z3 with “Jo”. He will live on in the hearts of people who knew and loved him, in the little things they cherish, and in a glass of bourbon.

He is survived by his wife Joann (Fagan) McLaughlin, of Rutland, by his daughters, Kristina (Tim) Severance, of Rutland, and Meg McLaughlin, of Proctor; by his grandchildren Madison and Collin Severance; sister, Sharon (McLaughlin) Doyle of Tucson, AZ; many nephews, and his grand dogs, who already miss their backyard time with grandpa.

He was predeceased by his father, Francis Michael McLaughlin; his mother, Jocelyn Claire (Bishop) McLaughlin; his brother, Michael McLaughlin; his sister, Pamela (McLaughlin) Tardiff; his sister, Maureen McLaughlin; and his in-laws, Emmett and Ann (Davis) Fagan.

A Celebration of Life for Tim will be held Saturday, March 29 from 10-2 at Southside Steakhouse, 170 So. Main Street Rutland, Vermont. There will be a private graveside service later in the Spring.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Foley Cancer Center.
