William Joseph Joyce Rutland - William “Billy” Joyce, 83, passed away peacefully at the Rutland Hospital following a short illness on December 17th 2024. Billy was born September 20, 1941 in Rutland, the son of John F. and Eureta (Rounds) Joyce. He was a graduate of Mount St. Joseph Academy and a proud Veteran. Billy lived his entire life in Rutland and had an incredible, joyful and eventful life. Billy loved his Joyce family and was proud of their strong faith and connection to the Catholic Church. He also had decades of great joy with his life partner Betty A. Melen and the world of the Rutland Country Club.
Billy was one of ten brothers and sisters and a life long Rutland family. Survivors include his sister Alta Rice of Rutland, sister in-law Jean Joyce of Rutland, the children and grand children of Betty Melen, and numerorous beloved nieces and nephews. Billy was predeceased by both parents; his life long companion Betty A. Melen; brothers Jack Joyce, Thomas Joyce, and Robert Joyce; sisters June Hughes, Pat Scott, Mary Rita Joyce, Judy Martel and Diane Joyce; also several nieces and nephews.
Billy had a dream life as he putted his way to numerous championships over 70 years at the Rutland Country Club. Yes, he won the coveted trophy of the Pierce tournament, as well as member guest tournaments and countless other celebratory victories with the swing of his club. Billy was honored as a recipient of the life long Rutland Country Club membership title. This meant the world to Billy. You see, Billy’s older brother Tommy let 12 yr old Billy tag along as he played the course at the country club. Billy graduated to the honor of shagging balls and polishing shoes and clubs of the many famous golfers of Rutland in the day. For almost 70 years, Billy swung and putted his way to victory and joy with friends and family on the greens of the Rutland Country Club.
Billy was a character for sure. Billy was a long time member and employee of the Rutland Elks Club. He loved his time with Betty and their travels together. Billy also loved his trips with friends and family to all of the major sports teams of Boston in the day. And certainly, not to forget joy of Saratoga. Billy will be missed and remember with much fondness and gratitude.
Funeral Services will be held Friday December 27, 2024 at 11:00am at St. Peter’s Church in Rutland. A reception will follow.
Burial will be in the spring of 2025.
Arrangements are under the direction of Clifford Funeral Home in Rutland.
